What is Legionnaire's Disease?

Infection in the Lungs

Legionnaire’s disease is a serious infection of the lungs caused by the bacteria Legionella. It got it's name from an outbreak at the 1976 American Legion convention in Philadelphia. People get sick when they breathe in aerosolized water droplets containing the bacteria. These droplets can come from cooling towers, decorative fountains, hot tubs, or other sources of warm water. Symptoms include fever, chills, muscle aches, and a cough. Legionnaire’s disease can be treated with antibiotics, but it can be fatal if not treated promptly.

Who Is at Risk for Legionnaire’s Disease?

Vulnerable Populations

Anyone can get legionnaire’s disease, but people over 50, smokers, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk. Other risk factors include chronic lung diseases, diabetes, and kidney disease. People who work or live in buildings with cooling towers or other sources of warm water are also at increased risk.

How to Prevent Legionnaire’s Disease

  • Avoid contact with water sources that could be contaminated with Legionella bacteria, such as decorative fountains, hot tubs, and cooling towers.
  • If you must come into contact with these water sources, wear a mask and gloves.
  • Clean and disinfect water systems regularly to prevent the growth of Legionella bacteria.
  • Educate yourself and others about Legionnaire’s disease and how to prevent it.
